Ken Kutaragi Says PS3 Online Is Free

This is great news, because as soon as it’s confirmed that he’s not lying or being crazy again (you have to wonder, since the interview this news comes from also mentions his vision of a “cyberworld”), that’ll be the day Xbox Live becomes free.
I think somebody ought to tell Ken that, though. I’m not so sure it’s a good idea to fight a war of revenue attrition with Microsoft.

If PS3 online is free, then it’s pretty much a given that it won’t be as robust a service as live, which means it’ll be crap in comparison. I’m not sure MS has reason to make Live free. If they did though, I’d almost feel sorry for Sony.

I’m just saying if that Sony gives them one, they will. I don’t doubt that Sony’s service will have its own growing pains like Live did, but Sony is definitely aiming to match Live. Once they come close, Microsoft will turn on a dime— it’s 100% certain. So it makes little sense for Sony to dangle this out like it means anything. But then, very little about the PS3 makes sense.

Well, aiming and doing are two different things. However, I agree. Push comes to shove, Live goes free and MS laughs all the way to… well, maybe not the bank. But you get the idea.

I especially loves this quote:
Yeah, Apple is doing it with music and trouncing us mercilessly in the process, because we were unable to update our antiquidated business model, so we’ll go and do just that with the world of online gaming.
Obviously, Sony still suffers from Apple envy.
Maybe someone told him that the iTunes Music Store allows you to download free music, because I honestly don’t understand how that comparison works.
